2018 CPA amendments

Amendments to Ontario's Consumer Protection Act and related regulations, taking effect through 2017-2018, that specifically targeted unfair door-to-door sales practices for furnaces, water heaters, heat pumps, air conditioners, and air filtration systems.

The 2018 amendments introduced a ban on unsolicited door-to-door sales of certain prescribed home services and goods, expanded the unfair-practice provisions, and tightened disclosure requirements for direct agreements.

Six grounds derived from the amendments are most often relied on in practice: unconscionable pricing, unsolicited contact, misrepresented energy savings, unfulfilled maintenance, improper installation, and unfulfilled rebate promises. Only one ground needs to apply.
